Selection of the executive

Under the NZMSA bylaws (article 8.18), once the Council is elected and announced, the Council will, within a reasonable period of time, meet to elect an Executive from among the Council.

In accordance with the bylaws, the nominations for each Executive position will take place in an open and verbal forum at the Council meeting.

Any member of Council may nominate another member of Council to an Executive position; however, a member of Council may not nominate him/herself.

Any member of Council may be elected to the Executive, whether or not the Council member is able to attend the meeting.

Council members will be asked to nominate a candidate for each of the following Executive roles.:

  • Vice-President (2-year term). The Vice-President shall succeed the President upon the expiration of the President’s term.

  • Secretary/ Treasurer (2-year term)

If more than one nominee is put forward, an election will occur.

In the event of an election, each Council member present at the meeting will get one vote.  No proxy votes will be accepted.

In the event of a tie, the election process will be repeated amongst the Council until one nominee receives a majority of the votes.
