President: Dr. Omoniyi Yakubu Adebisi

Dr. Omoniyi Yakubu Adebisi, MBChB, MD, CCFP(OSS), FCFPC, FAAFP, is the current President of the Central Zone Medical Staff Association (ZMSA) in Alberta, Canada. A dedicated Family Medicine and Obstetrics physician with over three decades of experience, Dr. Adebisi is committed to enhancing the ZMSA's role in providing fearless representation and advocacy for physicians, especially in rural areas, while championing equity, combating discrimination, and addressing racism within the healthcare system and beyond.

Born in Nigeria, Dr. Adebisi completed high school at St. Charles Grammar School in Osogbo in 1985 and earned his medical degree from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife in 1992. Early in his career, he served as a medical officer in Liberia, contributing to the United Nations Volunteer program and the United Nations Observer Mission in Liberia (UNOMIL) for the disarmament and demobilization of ex-fighters during the civil war.

In 2001, Dr. Adebisi joined the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, State of Georgia, USA as a resident in Family Medicine, completing his training in 2004. He pursued further specialization through a one-year Advanced Women’s Healthcare Fellowship at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, followed by a one-year Faculty Development and Surgical Obstetrics Fellowship at Medicos Para La Familia in Memphis.

Dr. Adebisi achieved board certification in Family Medicine from the American Board of Family Medicine in July 2004, and in Obstetrics from the Board of Family Medicine Obstetrics of the American Board of Physician Specialties in 2010. He is also certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) with additional credentials in Surgical Obstetrics. He holds fellowships from the American Academy of Family Physicians (FAAFP) and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (FCFPC).

Since relocating to Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada, in 2012, Dr. Adebisi has specialized in Family Medicine and Obstetrics, serving as a key maternity healthcare provider and Emergency Department physician in the community.

As an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine, Dr. Adebisi contributes to medical education. He founded the Save Nigerian Mothers Initiatives (SANMINIT), a program aimed at reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in Nigeria by training maternity healthcare providers the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO), facilitated through a bilateral agreement between the American Academy of Family Physicians and SANMINIT.

Dr. Adebisi has published many research articles, including "Anemia in Pregnancy and Race in the USA: Black at Risk," which highlights racial disparities in maternal health and underscores his passion for promoting equity and fighting against discrimination and racism in medicine. Through his leadership in the ZMSA and broader advocacy efforts, he continues to push for inclusive healthcare policies that address systemic biases and support underrepresented communities.

Secretary-Treasurer: Dr. Olubukola Apantaku

I graduated from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1997 and did my residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the United Kingdom. I was appointed to my current position at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre in 2009. 

I believe physicians should be well supported and feel safe and valued in the healthcare system. This is my motivation for joining the CZMSA executive. 

I enjoy biking in my leisure time and watching soccer.
